Laura Brown, Ph.D., is a New York-based writer and writing coach who has taught writing to just about everyone—from corporate executives to high school students. She has over 25 years’ experience providing customized training in business writing and consulting on business writing projects. Her expertise encompasses instructor-led training, individual coaching, classroom teaching, and e-learning development, as well as audio, video, and webinar training for businesses, non-profits, and educational institutions.
Laura has been active in e-learning since 1999. Along with e-learning pioneer Roger Schank, she partnered with Columbia University and General Electric to create a series of online business writing courses, including Business Writing for Professionals and American Business Writing for Global Executives and . She has developed e-learning modules for Citigroup and for several major global consulting firms.
As a stand-up trainer, Laura has provided group writing instruction to a variety of organizations, including AOL-Time Warner, Columbia Business School, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, and the New York Police Department. She has also developed several adult-learning communications courses for Columbia University,
Laura has special expertise in working with clients who are not native English speakers and specializes in helping executives from other countries adapt to American business writing conventions. She served for three years as English Communication Advisor for the Wharton School’s Global Chinese Business Initiative. She has also worked with global companies developing programs to facilitate communication between their US and India employees.
In addition to training and coaching, Laura is an accomplished writer. She has extensive experience writing white papers, case studies, articles, and Web content for clients. She has also worked as a ghostwriter and collaborator on business books on topics from marketing to management to e-commerce to commercial real estate.
Laura taught composition and literature at Columbia University and business and technical writing at Iona College.
Laura holds an M.A. in Drama from the University of London and a Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University. In her spare time, Laura works as a dramaturg for Red Bull Theater in New York.
